The Meaning of Nur: Light in the Qur'an
Our name is a single word - Nur, light. It is also one of the most beautiful themes in all of revelation.
In Arabic, nur means light. It is the soft glow that lets you see, that warms a dark room, that tells the traveller which way is home. The Quran returns to this image again and again — because the journey of faith is, at its heart, a journey out of darkness and into light.
Allah is An-Nur
Among the names of Allah is An-Nur, The Light. In Surah An-Nur, Allah describes this light with one of the most luminous verses in the Quran:
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. — Qur'an 24:35
This is not light like a lamp or the sun, which are themselves created. It is the Light by which everything else is seen — the source of all guidance, clarity and life. When a heart is near Allah, it is lit from within. When it drifts, the light does not disappear; the heart simply turns away from it.
Guidance is light, sin is darkness
Throughout the Quran, faith is described as light and misguidance as darkness. Allah promises to bring the believers out of darknesses into the light (Qur'an 2:257). Notice the wording: darkness is plural — there are many ways to be lost — but light is singular. There is one way home.
Why we are called Nur Co
Because that is the whole hope of this work. Not to lecture anyone, not to shame anyone, but to hold up a small light on a road somebody is already walking. One page a day, one ayah at a time.
If you are reading this and you feel far, the light has not gone anywhere. Turn toward it.
